The Graduate

I graduated from college people and a lot has happened since then.

I had a portfolio show last Friday showcasing the work that I accomplished while in college. Go to my website to see my portfolio!

www.emilyekern.com

Click 'portfolio' and click each skill to see a page out of my book!

Over the weekend we did so much stuff because the whole fam was there.

Meghan got me a grown up Bow necklace from TIFFANY!

We celebrated with some Sprinkles Cupcakes

We ate a lot of yummy meals and drank quite a bit of alcohol (it was a celebration...duh!) We also went to the Museum of Science and Industry the day before we packed up my apartment because...

SURPRISE!
I moved to Florida!

My Empty Apartment
Welcome to FL!

The movers came Monday morning and Joe and I left that afternoon. We road tripped all the way through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia! It was a long drive but Poseidon met us tail wagging and happy as could be when we got back. So happy in fact that he couldn't control his jumping.
It doesn't hurt as bad as it looks.

So anywho...I'm down here now and going to start looking for jobs as soon as the movers come with my stuff next week! Exciting stuff is ahead!

Just as I have graduated from college, I'm graduating from this blog. You can find a Joe & Emily adventure blog titled "The Odd Couple" at lumberjackandshopaholic.tumblr.com !!

I hope you'll continue reading about my life after being a college girl in the city!

XOXO

Super Bowl!

Sorry People....I'm in my final quarter of college so some things needed to be put on the back burner...and by "things" I mean this blog.

WE WON!!

I had an interesting Super Bowl experience. I was in Florida that weekend visiting Joe, and we realized right before the game started that FOX is the only channel that comes in as pure static on Joe's TV. Because I'm not in tune with FL people quite yet, and I was wearing my whole game day getup, I didn't really want to go to a bar. Plus we had bought all this food, and I made Super Bowl Brownies. So we stayed at his house and watched the static pretending it was snow. I couldn't see the ball, or anything for that matter, so I based my cheers upon the crowd and the family's text messages. Luckily I have NFL Network here in Chicago, so I DVR'd a replay and watched all the Sound FX, which can be found here:

Well worth the listen if you ask me. There have been so many great interviews with these guys. The best part is that Ellen DeGeneres was allll about the Packers, so she had Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews on her show afterward.

I'm glad the world now recognizes that we are a force to be reckoned with. Hopefully we'll be in the same place next year with all of our IR players back to continue "The Dynasty"!!

GO PACK GO! :)

New Year: New You!!!

I really HATE all the signs that say that everywhere. And by everywhere...I mean EVERYWHERE. The grocery store, borders, the bank, the gym, blah blah blah blah blah. Listen. Last year I made like 8-10 resolutions and I kept 1 of them. Just because it's 2011 does not mean that I'm going to transform into a skinny, well-informed, nicer, money-saver. If someone wants to change something about themselves, they should do it when they feel like it...not just in January.

Now, that being said, I've decided not to make a typical "New Years Resolution". I'm going to make a few life resolutions instead. I didn't start these resolutions until January 10th, because I figured by then I've already beaten out the people who have given up on their New Years Resolutions because they are impossible to keep. Here are my life resolutions:

1. Floss
-Not everyday. Not every other day. I'm just going to make a conscious effort to floss when I have the time and I feel like it. I never used to floss, and recent trips to the dentist have landed me at the conclusion that I'm going to have gingivitis before I'm 30 thanks to hereditarily weak gums (thanks mom and dad). Although this isn't my fault (hence the hereditary) my genes aren't going to bail me out of gum disease, so I'm going to take my mouth's future by the reins and change it.

2. Eat Healthier
-No I'm not on a diet. I'm not giving myself x amount of pounds to lose by June or whatever. I just want to eat better. Less Taco Bell, more turkey burgers. And I've added a protein shake in the mix (which I'm having a love affair with btw). It's for women and it's called "GNC WELLbeING:Be Buff" in chocolate- in case you are looking for one yourself.

3. Get back in the swing of working out.
-Again, not in an effort to lose weight. I used to work at a gym (Club Fitness- Holla!) and be obsessed with working out. After some unfortunate turns of events for my 17 year old self (quitting, a break up, etc) I stopped hitting the treadmill and turned to my Tivo for some consoling. That was in 2007 and I've dabbled in the gym scene a few times throughout the last few years, but I'm really into it becoming by BFF again. It just makes you feel good. Also- I graduate in March, and the unemployment rate is still pretty high. And although I don't want to be a Victoria's Secret model, I'd like to have it as my back up plan in case the marketing/advertising thing falls through.

4. Get a job...as in a career.
     Enough said.

I would just like to reiterate that this is NOT a plan to make this a NEW YEAR NEW ME! It's just a plan that I began on January 10th. It's all about making attainable goals and being realistic about how you achieve them!

Progress:

1. I've flossed about 12 of the last 20 days.
2. I have stuck with a healthy eating plan, had a protein shake after every work out, and only had an unhealthy meal about 4 times since January 10th.
3. I have a calendar in which I place star stickers on every day that I go to the gym (very kindergarten-esque) and I have 15 stickers on the calendar since Jan. 10.
4. I've applied for 1 big girl job, and I'm just hoping that one works out. It's very stressful applying for a job.

I think I'm doing all right for myself!

Winter 2010

I'm going to be a little lazy and just throw all of my winter activities into one post to get this ball rolling for 2011 blogging!

November was apparently a boring month, because I have not one picture to show for it. I was really busy at my internship at Cars.com, which I started in October and ended just before Christmas. It was such a great experience and allowed me to dive into an industry that wasn't fashion focused. I was really excited to broaden my resume and hopefully open up more opportunities for myself in the future. It is a great company to work for and I met a lot of awesome people as well!

I went home for Thanksgiving to hang with the family, eat some food, and watch some football (of course!). We have a tradition of seeing a movie on Thanksgiving, so we saw Burlesque, which was good -- minus Christina's acting and some copied story lines. The musical numbers were BA-NA-NAS! Seriously.

The beginning of December brought TBOX 2010 aka The Twelve Bars of X-mas! This is a pub crawl in Wrigleyville here in Chicago that is Christmas themed, and everyone wears ugly Christmas sweaters and crazy outfits. I went with a group of friends from school, and we had a lot of fun! I only lasted through 4 of the 12 bars, but it was a good time nonetheless.

FINALLY, winter break came along, and I got to go home for an extended period. Joe drove up from Florida to be with his family as well, and I hadn't seen him since my birthday, so it was really exciting! It was a pretty low key break. I saw all my friends, lounged around, spent family time, watched football, shopped, etc.

We went up to Wisco for Christmas, which was so awesome to see our extended fam! We spent Christmas day with the Dahlke side of the family and on Sunday we went to the Ekern side. It was so nice to see everyone since we aren't up there very often! Highlight: Finn telling me that "Aunt GG has a baby in her tummy!"

New Year's Eve was pretty low key. Joe and I went ice skating with one of my bffs- Blair. Then, we went down to Meghan's neighborhood and went out with her friends to a bar/bowling alley! Blair's boyfriend came down and we all hung out and bowled. It was a nice way to end a great year! :)

It's my party, and I'll wine if I want to.

My birthday lasted almost a month as I needed to celebrate with everyone I know the greatest gift: The gift of legal drinking. I took a trip home a couple weeks after my real birthday to hang out with my girls. We went with my family to one of our favorite STL spots, Sascha's Wine Bar. It was a ton of fun, and as you can see, it could have been a three year old's birthday party. My friends got me a crown and sash, and wrapped my presents in princess bags with matching balloons! We had a great bar tender (who we tried boldly to get my sister to date).

The best part was when our friends Amy and Carl showed up!! They are family friends, and they surprised me. I was so happy because I hadn't seen them since May!

Amy and I after she arrived!

Carl taught us how to make "Canadian Car Bombs" which turned out to be the EXACT SAME DRINK as my mother's "Italian Kiss," except you drink it like a bomb (duh).
Lombardi was pooped after a long day drinking wine.

Meghan and I with Amy and Carl!!

After the classy joint we had to just eat good in the neighborhood, so the fam headed over to Applebee's for a "White Trash Dinner". Is Applebee's really white trash? Maybe not, but after you've been at a wine bar -- yes, yes it is. The weekend was short, but a great extension to my already fabulous 21st birthday!

Applebee's...Enough Said.
